KeepGlide for desktop Help

KeepGlide for desktop help

KeepGlide for desktop is an app for Markdown notes and the files around them, kept in one vault. This page lists the main functions and how to use each one. KeepGlide for desktop is free for Linux (x86_64). Windows, macOS and Android are in production. Paid licenses are not open yet.

Write

Markdown notes and the three views

A note is a Markdown file in your vault. You can edit it, read it, or see both side by side.

  1. Open a note from the file tree, or with Ctrl+O.
  2. Press Ctrl+E to toggle between edit and read.
  3. Use the view buttons to pick side by side, which shows the source and the result together.
  4. Changes save on their own about one second after you stop typing.

Formatting shortcuts: Ctrl+B bold, Ctrl+I italic, Ctrl+Shift+H highlight, Ctrl+Enter task, and Ctrl+Shift+Enter heading, which cycles the heading level.

Tables, callouts, task checkboxes, ==highlight==, code blocks with syntax highlighting, math with KaTeX and Mermaid diagrams appear in read and side-by-side views.

Connect

Wikilinks, embeds and backlinks

Links keep your notes connected. The app follows them in both directions.

  1. Type [[note name]] to link to another note.
  2. Type ![[note name]] to embed another note inside the current one.
  3. Open the backlinks panel to see every note that links to the one you are reading.
  4. Check the unlinked mentions, and use the action to turn a mention into a link.
  5. Press Ctrl+G to open the graph of the current note or of the whole vault.

When you rename or move a file, the app rewrites the links that point to it.

AI agents (MCP)

A built-in MCP server lets AI agents read your notes and PDFs. Writing stays off until you turn it on. How MCP works

Read

PDFs

PDFs open in a tab, where you can mark them up and cite them from your notes.

  1. Open a PDF from the file tree or with Ctrl+O.
  2. Select text and choose highlight, underline or strike, in several colors.
  3. Add notes or text boxes on the page.
  4. To cite a page from a note, write a link with page=N, for example [[book.pdf#page=12]].
  5. Open the Citations panel on the right of the PDF to see each note's references by page. Turn on Show citation markers to show them on the page.

EPUB and other readers

Books and documents open inside the app.

  1. Open the file from the file tree or with Ctrl+O.
  2. EPUB, MOBI, FB2 and CBZ books open in the reader. ODT and DOC files open for viewing.
  3. For DOC files, install LibreOffice, antiword or catdoc first.

XLS and XLSX spreadsheets open read-only; CSV and TSV open as text. Images open, and audio and video play, inside the app. ZIP files can be previewed without extracting them.

Data and code

JSON files

JSON files open in the editor with live checks, so you see a broken file before you save it.

  1. Open a .json file. Errors appear as you type, with the line and column of each problem.
  2. Click Format JSON to beautify the file with 2-space indentation.
  3. In a note, put the cursor inside a JSON block. The block is validated and formatted at the cursor.

JSONL and NDJSON files are checked record by record, with an error for each bad line.

Code and config files open with syntax highlighting (JSON, XML, SQL, HTML, CSS, JS, Python, Go, Rust and more).

Find and move

Vault search

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+F to open search.
  2. Type a word, or add #tag to filter by tag, path: to filter by folder path, or color: to filter by color.
  3. Use the file-type filters to narrow the results by kind of file.
  4. Turn on title-only mode to match file names and titles only.

Quick switcher and command palette

  • Ctrl+O opens the quick switcher, to jump to any file by name.
  • Ctrl+P opens the command palette, to run any command. It shows the current shortcut next to each command.

The palette lists pinned and recent commands first; the quick switcher lists recently opened notes first.

Tabs, split panes and favorites

  1. Open files in tabs. Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab move between them, and Ctrl+W closes the current one.
  2. Split panes show two documents side by side. Pop-out windows open a document in its own window.
  3. Add folders, files, saved searches, headings or blocks to favorites to find them again quickly.

Keep it safe

Trash, version history and conflicts

  1. In Local mode, a deleted file goes to the local trash and stays there until you restore it or delete it forever. Open the trash in Settings and choose Restore or Delete forever next to the file.
  2. Open the version history of a note to see its earlier versions.
  3. Compare an earlier version with the current one, then restore it if you want.

By default, a note edited on both sides is merged: the edits made on both sides are kept in one note. When the edits overlap, or the file is not a note, the app keeps both versions; the other one goes to a _conflicts folder.

Three modes

Each computer picks its own mode in Settings > This machine and the vault, so one machine can sync while another stays local.

Local mode is free. When paid licenses open, a license will add Sync and Cloud: US$19, one-time. Without a license, Settings offers Local mode only.

  • Local (“Local folder only”): the vault stays on this computer.
  • Sync (“Sync to a local folder”): a folder on this computer mirrors the vault in your Google Drive, with a sync queue. It works offline, and the queue survives restarts. For the Google Drive setup, follow Connect Google Drive.
  • Cloud (“Everything in the cloud”): the vault lives in Google Drive. For the Google Drive setup, follow Connect Google Drive.

Make it yours

Themes and settings

  • Choose from 24 built-in themes, each light or dark, or add your own custom themes.
  • Set separate fonts for the interface, the editor, reading and monospace text, and change the text size.
  • Use the app in English or Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Remap the shortcuts of the app's commands in Settings; the editor's formatting shortcuts are fixed. The command palette always shows the shortcut in use.
